The Senior Category Manager is the key link between the supplier/producer and the customer. Therefore, understanding our customers’ needs and knowing the product assortment is especially important. In this role you build your category in a way to increase sales, profit and above all, customer satisfaction.

We aim to re-invent the food supply chain while reducing unethical food waste and connecting consumers with quality producers. Therefore, you need to understand the whole process starting from the supplier, through receiving goods and picking to the delivery to the customer to help optimize the entire chain and ensure the competitive advantage of Gurkerl. We are looking for an entrepreneurial thinking Senior Category Manager to help us grow Gurkerl in Vienna.

Product Range

  • Build and manage the width and depth of the product range to meet customer needs
  • Ensure right (from good to excellent) quality of goods and optimize packaging to reduce waste
  • Guarantee very high stock availability and and manage emergency buying when exceptionally needed
  • Maintain a perfect master data quality
  • Increase inventory turnover and reduce stock days without negatively impacting buying conditions and operational handling
  • Constantly looking for innovations and trends even beyond Austrian borders and being the first one to bring them to the Austrian market
  • Monitor the trends on product and packaging solutions, in the market and competition and launch innovation rapidly to become market leader in your category
  • Regular assortment revision based on seasonality and searching for opportunities through regular store checks at competitors
  • Set product prices to be competitive according to the price policy
  • Plan promotional activities to grow the category and competitiveness and make sure availability, inventory optimization, and vendor volume are assured.

Turnover & Margin

  • Lead the turnover and margin plan for your category
  • Build the category action plan to reach the targets on both turnover and margin
  • Continuously improve the commercial conditions to meet the budget of turnover and margin without exploiting suppliers/producer, but creating win-/win-situations


  • Represent the company and behaves in accordance with the values ​​of Gurkerl
  • Manage supplier relationships, ensuring continuous performance improvement and implementing the necessary action plans, (e.g. delivery time & quality improvements)
  • Always considering the suppliers' perspective: cost savings on the suppliers' side lead to increasing margin
  • Visits and checks suppliers' operations (mainly in fresh assortment)
  • Concludes supplier contracts (SLA) and is responsible for maintaining them
  • Build and develop supplier relationships via joint business planning and lead quarterly performance review meetings for key suppliers (measure vs. KPIs)


  • Collaborates closely with operations, marketing, supply chain and finance
  • Open to new ideas and actively seeking opportunities to simplify and automate work


  • Turnover, Margin, Customer Satisfaction / Quality (mystery shopping)

We like people who

  • Have min. 5 years’ food procurement experience in FMCG, Food Retail or the Hospitality Industry.
  • Entrepreneurially minded, attention to detail and takes an innovative approach to problem solving.
  • A structured and fact-based approach is for you a matter of course
  • Very ambitious and are very hands-on as you will do the job yourself in the beginning.
  • Driven to achieve highest quality in daily work and constantly improve customer satisfaction. You enjoy working in an innovative and ever-changing environment
  • Have demonstrated the ability to negotiate, to source products and influence cross functional and external stakeholders in current and / or previous roles
  • Experience in building and managing supplier relationships
  • Have a proven track record of sound commercial acumen and proven ability of delivering against KPIs within previous roles.
  • Team player and good communication skills
  • Strong food knowledge in Vienna (trends, channels etc)
  • Fluency in German and English a must
  • Required: driving license
